The Gloucestershire Kitchen

Nestled in the serene Gloucestershire countryside , this beautiful farmhouse underwent a stunning transformation to blend modern functionality with classic aesthetics. This month’s inspiration delves into the meticulous design and execution of a kitchen renovation project that perfectly embodies the ‘Contemporary Country’ style.

The vision; a contemporary country kitchen.

Sustainable Kitchens was appointed back in 2022 to help its clients, owners of a charming farmhouse, embark on a comprehensive renovation journey. With the help of an architect, the clients reimagined their rustic property into a modern yet homely abode. Central to their renovation was creating their dream kitchen – functional, social, and aesthetically pleasing.

The heart of the home; the kitchen island

At the core of this kitchen's design is a large, multifunctional island. The island is not just a preparation area but a hub for social interaction. It features a classic Shaws Double Bowl 800 sink (chosen for its farmhouse appeal and practical design) alongside a  BORA induction hob.  Positioned within the island, the hob allows for seamless cooking and conversation.

The island's placement in front of large bifold doors ensures the kitchen is bathed in natural light, offering picturesque views of the landscaped garden.

"We are so happy with our new kitchen. Right from the beginning, we were provided with a design that we loved, and it has been turned into the real thing that we love. We love the quality and finish. Our kitchen highlights are the big pantry cupboard which is the greatest cupboard ever! We also love our handmade Shaws sink and the different wood frontages on the drawers which create a real feature and add interest to the room."

Design aesthetic; contemporary country.

While the farmhouse underwent a contemporary makeover, the clients desired a kitchen that echoed traditional country charm. Sustainable Kitchens achieved this balance with a wall of large, shaker-style larders  to provides ample storage and reduce the need for upper cabinets. Cabinetry is painted in Farrow & Ball's Green Smoke, adding a rich, earthy tone that complements the countryside vibe. The worktops are elegant Areanstone Bianco Nuvolo  to add texture and light to the space.

Aged brass fixtures and fittings, again, add warmth, including the Ionian deck-mounted bridge mixer from Perrin & Rowe.

The selection of high-quality brands that feature in the kitchen renovation underscores a commitment to durability and timeless elegance, ensuring that the space remains both beautiful and functional for many years to come.

This project is a testament to how thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship can transform a traditional space into a modern, functional kitchen without losing its original charm. The collaboration between the homeowners, architect, and Sustainable Kitchens resulted in a beautifully balanced space that meets contemporary needs while celebrating the essence of a country kitchen.
